This evening.. in the midst of the evening chaos of a family of 5 meeting for dinner with 2 more. I decided I was going to rock and roll on the piano a bit. Then, I was inspired to rattle on with a few more riffs. The enjoyment was so liberating that I jumped in all the way and started really banging the keys. I think it sounded decent... I dont know... I just know that it was elating to play some rock and roll without really thinking about anything else.
One day, I dream that I will play the keys like Fess (aka Doctor Professor Longhair) or Old lovinghair as the ladies call him. Here is a gift idea for me: http://www.louisianamusicfactory.com/showonemerch.asp?TypeID=74&ProductID=30037
Also, today I delivered my 10th speech at Toastmasters. That was interesting! This means I am awarded with the Competent Communicator status.

Quote from Rick Pitino's book
I have returned to one my favorite books, Success is a Choice, by one of the most inspirational modern-day coaches, Rick Pitino. Here is the quote that sums up the day:
When you go to the table with greatness, everyone eats better.
~Rick Pitino
The coolest part about this book is its accessibility to simply anyone on any project with any group of people. It is certainly part of my regular diet of success in business and sports!!
Today, at the Deltec plant, we celebrated the 55kwh solar array on our roof! It was a wonderful engagement with speakers: David Hall (Deltec President), Charles Thomas (NC House Representative for Buncombe County), Craig DeBrew (of Progress Energy) and Heath Shuler (US Representative for the 11th District of North Carolina). What a cool experience to be part of. I am ecstatic to represent and work with such a progressive company!! And it gets better...
As David Hall put it, "This is NOT the culmination of our greening efforts."
...more to come.
bam!
Deltec Ribbon Cutting w/ Heath Shuler!!
Very exciting news:
Monday January 14th, Heath Shuler, US Representative of 11th District of North Carolina, will come to Deltec's facility to perform the ceremonial ribbon cutting for our new 55kw solar array!!
Here is the official invitation.
See you there,
Brett
Bob Schneider to Asheville
I know this isn't really Ultimate nor Business related, but it is a noteworthy part of my personal life. Bob is making a road back to Asheville. Last time he was scheduled he got sick or booked doing something more important... anyway, he is back on the trip. And we will be there!!

SMc back in the day

I grew up in Dallas. After Berkner High School, I went to Budapest, Hungary for a year on exchange. When I returned, I started on my Computer Engineering degree at University of Texas at Dallas. This picture is on the UTD fields just outside my apartment. My brother was living in New Orleans at the time and he compiled a team of Lousiana + St. Louis + me to win the Funk Fest knocking out Dallas in the finals!! It must have been 1995 or 96. Not certain, it was before my parents moved out of the house we grew up in at 1322 Alto Drive, Richardson.
I love this picture because Sean has such a dynamite smile. It was truly a high time and we tore it up on that field!! Many a tournament have I won under the leadership of my brother Sean. Including, of course, NoTsuOh @ Paganello
Uncle G in the news
Check out brother Grant (aka Uncle G or Uncle Cheeeeeesburger) on the Tucson featurette about his team Barrio.
They are at the end of the show, so if you want to see the ultimate, wait for the video to load then go about 2/3 along the bar.
Yeah Grant, my favorite throw is a throw that are caught!! You rock.

Warren Wilson College storms with a complete reversal (and then some) at League
Wednesday evening, the Warren Wilson College Ultimate team played a rematch against a city wide team and stormed away with a 13-6 win!! This team beat them at the beginning of this season 8-13. What an improvement!!! You played like you practiced!
Nice Pre-season game you'ns! What you gonna look like at Wofford this weekend?
I expect a gold for the dub dub see.
Si?!
In Team Capitan Asher Wright's words, "We are all ballers."
Looking forward to hearing all about it.

language, ultimate and thegreatestsporteverinvented
First, I went to train the Warren Wilson College Ultimate team yesterday. The leadership had been asking me to address spread offense. I had also just seen them at their own tournament, Pork Classic, the prior weekend so I had some pointers that I thought would radically help their game. So, I pushed them hard, focused on shortening their game and tightening them up. Then I introduced the zone like spread offense and encouraged them to open up the long game. Everything in between was unsatisfactory.
I pushed them hard and they responded like a well toned muscle springing into action at each prompt. I was impressed by their discipline and their eager attention to the details I was laying out.
They still have 10 weeks of training they need before their throws will be primed for a solid spread offense, but they are off to a fantastic start.
Then, today, I was moodling and found Christina Kane's recent posting called watch your language and my mind went wild with ideas (as my mind has the tendency to frequently binge on crazy).
In another few keystrokes, I landed on an email from one of the 5Ultimate guys with a link to a book called: the greatest sport ever invented by man. Nice title choice Leonardo!
While I was washing the dishes this evening Diana asked me if something was wrong. I snapped out of an intense daze where I was on the sidelines at the WWC game, happening at that very same moment, and realized that my obsession is only growing. Coaching the receptive players at WWC, seeing them improve, dreaming about the sport... its my greatest passion. "I was dreaming about Ultimate. That's all."
Now, I just need to manage how I can coach twice a week, make a few tournaments and some of the weekly games. I am not even eager to step on the field as a player... I just want to coach those players who want to grow!!!
Pass the word.

greening in Chicago
Well.. probably the most popular color of today's news, Chicago is covered in green this week. I am here for the Greenbuild conference. It has been an interesting conference with many many businesses positioning their products for the green building industry.
Most of the businesses are commercially focused. These businesses are simply following suite with the certification and standardization practices in the construction industry. I was most inspired and surprised by the diversity of the folks present at this conference. Usually, the typical attendee has been the hippy type green talkin' student. This conference brings more professional services type folks to the market: architects, engineers, contractors, developers, building owners, and of course the businesses who serve these professions.
It was enlightening to see where the market is saturated as well as the areas that are lacking. One of which is the pre-fabricated housing market... it was non-existent at this event. And, it seems to be non-existent in the market all together.
...I am hoping to make my way to the United Center for the Bulls/Pistons game!!
To be... NOT!
Ok, lots of questions to explore...
Like, am I making the trip to Nationals to see brother Sean with DoubleWide and brother Grant with Bario?! [Admittedly, I have to set my ego aside that I am not making the show to play with my own team!!]
Next question: do I spend the time and money updating my website to a new and improved interface to I can do much more with it when I am ready? I will be able to more easily add and remove content and interactivity.
Final question: I have the blog format already setup, I should probably maintain it for some purpose, like business development or something along those lines. So, why am I not using this to cast my thoughts out to the electronic sea... see who bits? Imagine it is time to do just that. Ok, again I get to set that ever present and defensive ego protector aside and be ok with saying something dorky.
... so, if you are reading now, I say you can expect more. So, expect more... and please harass me about it!!

Talladega Nights... sychronisity is in the strangest places!!
So, after posting the last topic on "winning attitude" I watched Talladega Nights. I wouldn't say it was the Best Movie Ever Made, Ricky Bobby. But I loved the turning point:
Susan: It's because it's what you love, Ricky. It is who you were born to be. And here you sit. Thinking. Well, Ricky Bobby is not a thinker. Ricky Bobby is a driver. He is a doer, and that's what you need to do. You don't need to think. You need to drive. You need speed. You need to go out there, and you need to rev your engine. You need to fire it up. You need to grab ahold of that line between speed and chaos, and you need to wrestle it to the ground like a demon cobra. And then, when the fear rises up in your belly, you use it. And you know that fear is powerful, because it has been there for billions of years. And it is good. And you use it. And you ride it; you ride it like a skeleton horse through the gates of hell, and then you win, Ricky. You WIN! And you don't win for anybody else. You win for you, you know why? Because a man takes what he wants. He takes it all. And you're a man, aren't you? Aren't you?
It's because it's what you love!!!
Get it on girl!
... so, I probably don't need to say this, but I was floored that the thrust for his return was to do it for himself. That he was the only motivation he needed.
... I love pop culture!
winning attitude
Giorgio Chinaglia, the notorious bad boy from the New York Cosmos (perhaps the best Soccer team ever) said, If you don’t have an ego in sport, you’re not going to go far.
It is apparent with other super stars as well. From Phil Mickelson to Michael Jordan, I have heard the same stories about how they are so confident it is easy to interpret as arrogant and cocky. They do not actively hide their greatness and magnificence; therefore, they must believe they are the best, the greatest, there is NONE higher!!!
King of kings! Better than Best!
I recall when I learned the story of Narcissus. My teacher said we all have narcissistic tendencies. She continued saying that this tendency is the cause for us to continue living.
I was eager at the time to prove that I had none of this in me. I was attempting to show how virtuous I could be, but my hindsight tells me now that she was accurate and I was disillusioned by the social drug of selflessness.
Today, I understand that the ONLY way to serve others is to be completely serving Self-interest. That is a capital S-elf, the core of who I am, which I listen closely to for my guidance. And this guidance provides me with information about how to best serve me! Many times the guidance and choice I make is to serve the people in front of me. To give to them all that I have to give. It is because I listen to my self interest that I have something to give; without this bank of attention on my Self I would have nothing to offer.
It is one of the trickiest, socially stickiest topics I have ever ventured on. The book Atlas Shrugged by Ayn Rand is at its core about this belief in one's Self interests. In fact, Rand displays with painfully long discourse the path of social selflessness and the results of a completely "selfless" nation of leaders.
The irony is this, a leader is by definition in service to his/her constituents.

Playing Philosophy

-Jack Dempsey, 1919 Heavyweight Champion
Why "Greatest"?
Well it starts with "the greatest play in Ultimate." This occurs when a player jumps from inbounds, catches the disc as s/he heads out of bounds, and throws the disc to a teammate before touching the ground. Thus their team retains possession and play continues. This is the greatest.
Additionally, Greatest and Ultimate are, in most cases, interchangeable to mean most high. Eventually, I plan to put some kind of marketing material that plays on all the different variations on this concept:
greatest ultimate paramount champion superior supreme pinnacle maximum choice master chief elite prime total solid best true pure king peak roof full top ace
The name is all about the mentality of thinking and BEING the greatest. Which brings me to the point that tipped the scale, Muhammad Ali! On his rise to break records for the youngest title holder ever, Cassius Clay claimed he is the greatest of all time. Then he backed it up by accomplishing the World Heavyweight Title against Sunny Liston in 1964.

The odds that Ali would win were 7 to 1!!! Then he became the most recognizable face in the world. So, I thought it was appropriate that the name of my company share in attitude as the Greatest Muhammad Ali!!
Besides all that, its the mentality of success. How could this not be the GreatestUltimate Marketing company?!
